Contemporary artist Johanna Bolton is currently doing a residency at the Borough Road Gallery art store. Below are her notes and some sketches she has made in preparation for her upcoming exhibition and workshop at the gallery in the fall.
This week I have been thinking about the history of the painter’s movements when working. Mark making, lines, technique and energy. Like vectors carrying information about the direction from a given point.
I have started by investigating separating out directional marks in the paintings in the collection. An assembly of diagonal, vertical and horizontal marks. Here are two examples, work in progress.
